“The annual Turkey Bowl Soccer Classic will be held on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 24, 2011 at Berra Park on The Hill. The event features two classic soccer games.

At 9am, the St Ambrose 5th & 8th grades defend a challenge from the 6th & 7th graders. Then, the Old Timers match will begin at 10:15am till Noon. The game features 60 outstanding soccer players from The Hill, including many elected to the Soccer Hall of Fame.

The first Turkey Bowl was in 1928, making the event the longest continuous tradition on The Hill. Since 1979, the matches have been nearly even. The Old Timers have won 11, The Younger Team 9, there has been 8 ties, and 4 rainouts, including last year.

A large crowd is expected to attend, especially if the weather cooperates. If not, show up under the pavillion, anyway, that’s where the good times continue. Spectators are treated to a hospitality tent with bakery goods, hot drinks, along with grilled luganiga sausages. A donation jar with proceeds benefitting the St Vincent de Paul Society of St Ambrose Parish will be on the tables. In the past 7 years, over $8,000 has been donated.

Turkey Bowl souvenir shirts will be available for purchase. Again, proceeds benefitting St Vincent de Paul Society. The shirts are made possible by the generousity of numerous neighborhood sponsors listed on the back.

In fact, this event is a true community sponsored event from referees/officials, banners, permits, programs, equipment, and volunteers. Everyone pitches in to make this an outstanding holiday tradition.
